I use Toronto tap water for all my tanks. Filled with plain inert sand, tree branches, natural rocks, and dried leaves. Example can be found here .

These shrimps eat anything and everything. There is no need for shrimp food to keep them alive. They will happily graze on biofilm growing in the tank, as well as fish food and plant matter.
I like to experiment with a variety of foods. Here you can see kale and spinach being consumed. They will also gladly accept meaty foods like bloodworms and fish food.
Overfeeding is a common way to kill off their population. In many setups, they do not need to be fed at all. They can sustain entirely off of other fishes and algae growth without human intervention.
Feeding must be kept low in order to maintain large populations generation after generation!
